| Maumee Bay Triathlon/Duathlon 6/20/2010 | WOW! What a great weekend for racing…at least weather wise. I set what I thought was a very obtainable goal for this weekends Olympic Triathlon at Maumee Bay…2:42:53
Except there was a road block in my way. A friends 40th b-day bash the night before. The theme was Beer Tasting and everyone was required to bring a 6 pack of non-commercial beer (Bud, Miller, etc) to share. Now how you can not resist the sampling of great beers all night? Well I think I should have passed but being one for peer pressure I sucked down 7 great beverages. The wife and I left that shindig at 11:30 and got up to the Port Clinton area at about 12:30am. Of course I drove because she was sleepy so I took another one for the team…UGH. 5 hours later the alarm goes off at 5:30. The snooze button was my friend at least twice. I race out the door grabbing breakfast and jumping in the car by 6:10am. As I made the 45 minute drive I am trying to enjoy a bottled water, banana and a couple pieces of French toast. With every bite and swallow I can feel the alcohol still sitting in the belly…HELP! I arrived got my packet and looked at the swim course. Immediately I look and say no problem it looks like a good quick swim…then I see another set of buoy’s way the hell out there…UH OH…this is going to be a little ruff. So at 8:17 I toe the line and the gun goes off. My goal for the swim was 32 minutes. Not lightening fast but I only did one 1600 meter pool workout 2 weeks prior so I was going to pace myself focus on the bike and run. I am out of the water in 31:33…YES…I washed my feet and hit the transition in 32:44. Now its time to go to work and get a hammering on the bike. My goal was 20mph average so I got into a good rythym and got to it. After 19 miles I was well ahead of schedule so I backed off a little to get ready to crank the run out. Hit the transition at 1:13:44 (20.1avg). Out of T2 the legs felt great and were turning a 8:33 pace and my goal was 9 minute average. Well I thought it was going to happen then IT happened…at 1 mile the legs stopped turning over and my heart rate fell to 160 and would not go back up…CRAP! The body has run out of nutrition but was hydrated. I watched with frustration as my goal time quickly started to escape from my grasp! I finished with a VERY disappointing 10:22 pace and officially have run my slowest 10k in my life…1:03:52. Hitting my goal time would have put me in 4th from 7th but hey…that’s partying and racing for you. Until the next race, Matt | Matthew Tuskan |
